Malm÷ orders Citytunnel TBM

NEWS

CITYTUNNEL CONTRACTOR Malm÷ Citytunnel Group (MCG) has ordered the TBMs to bore the two 4.5km long tunnels under the centre of Malm÷ for the city's metro project. The first of the Herrenknecht machines will be delivered in September 2006 and the second a few months later.

The Citytunnel project comprises 17km of railway connecting Malm÷ Central Station and the Oresund Bridge between Sweden and Denmark. It will also connect southern Sweden's railway systems and increase future capacity. The project is made up of a 6km long tunnelled section under central Malm÷ and 11km of railway above ground.

The 9m diameter, 120m long TBMs will be assembled in the launch shaft. Tunnelling will start at the end of 2006 and beginning of 2007 and will take an estimated two years, with the TBMs reaching Malm÷ Central station during the second half of 2008. Work began in March and is due to finish in 2011.
