Make employment compulsory

Letters

I cannot believe the belittling tone or negative content of Mr Gray's letter (NCE 5 June) on the subject of contractors complaining about the current standard of graduates.

As a contractor who started my working life with a consulting engineer and who attended a traditional university I believe the following is true:

Sandwich or traditional degree, it doesn't matter;

Red brick former polytechnic or stone built cloistered university, it doesn't matter;

HNC, HND, ordinary, Honours or Masters degree, it shouldn't matter;

Technician or chartered engineer, it shouldn't matter;

What does matter is hard work, motivation, tenacity, impartiality and a sense of humour. I would make employment, for at least a year, in both a consultant's design office and a contractor's site office, compulsory!
