Major service

Tarmac Precast is to supply SDC Construction, main contractor for Rover BMW's new engine plant at Hams Hall in the Midlands, with more than 700 box culverts.

The culverts weigh over 11t each, are 2.5m2 in section and 2m long. They are being laid in 17 trenches, each 88m (44 units) long, to make up a network of service tunnels under the new factory floor. Suspended within the service way for utilities will be a collection flume for swarf, coolant and other detritus, which will then be recycled.

The reinforced concrete culverts are being cast at Tarmac Precast's factory at Henlade in Somerset.
