Main attraction

A customised version of Wirtgen's SP 500 slipform paver was used to pave the track bed on part of the high speed line between Frankfurt/Main airport and the River Main.

Working 10-hour shifts, main contractor Dyckerhoff & Whitman achieved daily outputs of up to 700 linear metres of the trackbed with its continuously- varying cross-section. Wirtgen says the secret was the use of special lateral formwork, controlled in two directions at once. Client Deutsche Bahn AG chose the concrete trackbed because of its longer service life and reduced maintenance costs, it says.
