M1/A1 Link Road

Shortlisted schemes Major Projects

The largest and one of the first privately financed highway projects in the UK the M1/A1 Link Road was completed on budget and ahead of schedule by a joint venture assembled only two weeks before the contract award. After its completion the National Audit Office rated the contract to be the best value DBFO project in Highways Agency's Tranche One.

The 30km of new and widened motorway and 150 structures form a strategic link across England, south-east of Leeds. Throughout the project the emphasis was on obtaining high quality to achieve the best possible balance of capital and whole life cost. Techniques to minimise cost in this road included revising earthworks profiles during the work to match the volumes of naturally arising materials.
