Lower subs for low paid members

I read with disbelief the article 'ICE plans subs hike to halt membership decline' (NCE 8 January). As a mature chartered civil engineer now forced into a low paid administrative job, I have been seriously considering if I can afford to keep paying my membership.

This announcement acknowledges that more people are leaving than joining and hopes to stabilise the membership by 2008. Is this when all the members in my situation decide to let their membership lapse because of the high subscriptions?

I have asked the Institution to consider a reduced rate for those in full time, low paid work like myself. Perhaps others need to ask the same question.
