Louise Ellman appointed new transport committee chair

MP for Liverpool Riverside Louise Ellman has been appointed chair of the Transport Select Committee of MPs, replacing Gwyneth Dunwoody who died suddenly last month.

Mrs Ellman has been a member of the Transport Committee and its predecessor committees since she was first elected to Parliament in 1997. She is also a Co-Chair of the Advisory Council of the Parliamentary Advisory Council of Transport Safety (PACTS).

She replaces interim chair David Clelland, who took on the role while a permanent replacement was found. Mrs Ellman's election was unopposed.

A vacancy remains for a Labour member of the Committee, who will be appointed by the House in due course.

Voting for the Crewe and Nantwich by-election begins today, in what has been a vitriolic campaign. Mrs Dunwoody's daughter Tamsin is hoping to secure the seat, but there is a strong challenge from Conservative candidate Edward Timpson.
