Long reach help for Jersey scheme

Delivery of a new long reach JCB excavator to a project site in Jersey is helping Can Geotechnical to complete the final stages of a major slope stabilisation scheme.

The old quarry face behind three apartment blocks in St Helier has collapsed several times over the last 10 years but the risk is now being removed by a complex soil nailing scheme.

The work, which started in July last year, has recently received a boost in productivity with delivery of a new long reach excavator specially designed to improve the soil nailing operations.

The bespoke JCB JS260 LC is expected to operate for over 2,000 hours to complete the drilling work for the soil nailing operations and will also be used to excavate more than 17,000m3 of rock and soil.

Can specified the excavator with a long reach boom and dipper configuration to give it a reach of 18.3m to enable it to reach down from the crest of the slope to drill soil nails and rock bolts into the slope face below.

Can Geotechnical director Richard Nicholson said: “We will use it [the long reach excavator] extensively over the coming years for other soil nailing and bolting projects on highways, railways and construction sites across the UK.”
