Your correspondent Nick Chapman (NCE 13 June) does not seem to have heard of a well known public body called the police force.
They turn up to accidents much quicker than the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). I don't think the HSE would investigate the case of an unsupervised five year old child, who rode their bike off the footway into a passing car.
I support cycling and carry out audits to see how provision for cyclists can be integrated into new highway schemes.
But contrary to the cyclist's battle cry, motorcyclists, the disabled and pedestrians are the most vulnerable highway users. Take out people under 18 and cycling accidents involving injury become statistically insignificant.
To accommodate cyclists, often the only options involve expensive land purchase or narrowing of existing footways and carriageway lanes. I am sure that wheelchair users and mothers with prams would be justifiably put out by 1.2m footways so that ten cyclists a day could cycle in the perceived comfort of their own strip of highway.
