London Gateway rail line construction contract at prequalification stage

DP World is in the prequalification stage for a construction contract on a freight rail line to connect its giant London Gateway port to the main line.

DP World civil engineering director Andrew Bowen told NCE that the detailed design work on the rail line was being carried out by Atkins and was nearly complete. Construction work will involve twin tracking a new branch line which will connect to the main line along with a large rail siding at the port for loading cargo.

There are 15 unnamed bidders at this stage and the prequalified bidders will be able to tender next quarter. The construction contract will be announced early next year when the tender process for another project, an upgrade to the A13 and A1014 junction will also be announced.
