London flood protection consultation to be launched

A consultation on flood protection for London and the Thames Estuary is to be launched early next year as part of the Thames Estuary 2100 project, flooding experts told delegates at Civils 2006.
Environment Agency senior technical specialist Owen Tarrant told delegates that a consultation was due to be launched in April or May on the options for protecting the Thames Estuary for the next 100 years.Options being considered include provision of additional storage, raising of existing defences, managed realignment of the coastline and construction of a new barrier.'Whatever solutions we implement they must be capable of adaptation to future risk; we have to employ the precautionary principle,' he said.A draft plan will be produced in 2008/09 and the final strategy will be developed a year later in 2009/10.
