Liverpool to be base for Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm

Energy giant RWE will construct its Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm using facilities at Birkenhead port near Liverpool after agreeing terms with Cammell Laird shipyard today.

The energy firm has signed a three year lease with Cammel Laird for a 14ha site including a nearby 230m long quay on the western bank of the mouth of the River Mersey.

Foundations for the 160 wind turbines will be pre-assembled and launched to the wind farm site in Liverpool Bay about 18km off the Welsh Coast.

RWE, together with electronic firm Siemens and the municipal utility of Munich, is constructing the 576MW wind farm which is due to open in 2014.
