Liverpool ONE opens

The second phase of the £1bn 17ha Liverpool ONE development, conceived as a catalyst for the regeneration of Liverpool, was officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and the Duke of Westminster yesterday.

The development provides a mix of retail, leisure, office, hotel and residential space in Liverpool city centre as well as five acres of parkland. It contains over 30 buildings designed by 27 different architects in five distinct districts all built around the existing streets of Liverpool

The second phase, which includes the park, offices and remainder of the retail opened today. The first phase which comprised the majority of the retail and carparking opened in May. The main residential unit and hotels will open in 2009

"The opening of phase two is the culmination of eight years' work since Grosvenor was selected in 2000 as Liverpool City Council's development partner," said Liverpool One project director, Rod Holmes.

"Delivering this wonderful development, as promised and in the year Liverpool is Capital of Culture, has not been without its challenges but we believe the results are well worth it."
