Lightweight Fillmaster cuts M6 settlement risk

VENCEL RESIL'S Fillmaster expanded polystyrene is preventing settlement in a new embankment on the M60 motorway south of Manchester.

Widening of the motorway is a major job, affecting four separate junctions (GE June 04).

At Junction 8 at Sale two roundabouts will be replaced with one large one; a sound bund will be built and the junction raised by about 1m.

However, some of the original PFA fill added over the peat deposits had to be removed and main contractor, an Amec-Alfred McAlpine joint venture, was concerned that heavier fill would cause settlement in the embankment.

Using Fillmaster blocks reduced the loading, installed in 11 layers of varying grade strengths along a 140m stretch of road.Work was finished in four months.
