London's latest landmark, the Arup/Foster designed 30 St Mary Axe tower marked structural completion last week with a spectacular light show as contractor Skanska raised the final steel beam into position. The 180m high building rests on 9km of piles and will be covered by 24,000m 2ofcladding. The transfer structure at level two carries loads of 5MN, transmitted by a steel frame weighing 10,000t.
The tower is expected to open in September after a 146 week construction programme.
Client for the project is Swiss Re.
