Following investigation of a 638 space car park in Banbury, built using the lift-slab method, an extensive renovation and repair exercise has been carried out. The car park was previously owned and operated by Cherwell District Council, but after an inspection showed extensive rehabilitation would be necessary, bids were sought from the private sector for the refurbishment or replacement of the facility followed by a period of operation.
The contract was awarded to Meteor Parking, a consortium which included consultant Maunsell and car park refurbishment contractor Dundec Contracts. Following detailed inspection by Maunsell it was decided to deal with the areas of actively corroding reinforcement using impressed cathodic protection.
New crash barriers were fitted and steel collars fixed at each column head. To prevent future penetration of chloride salts, Dundec applied waterproofing to all the top deck surfaces. New colour co-ordinated delineated driveways and parking bays were also installed in the waterproofing and protective coatings. Finally, new lighting was installed.
