Let's get it done

With regard to the Stonehenge Tunnel (NCE 28 February), in the national interest all the involved parties – the government, National Trust and English Heritage – have to agree to compromise.

Continuing to do nothing is not in anyone's interest. This compromise must surely be a cut and cover tunnel with a two-year pre-contract period allowed for investigation, removal and preservation of any archaeological and ecological aspects of interest along the identified new route, with a 200m-wide band provided for search.

This would halve the bored tunnel cost and give anyone a solution reasonably close to their aspirations. Let's get on with it.
