Leighton the scene

I read with interest your articles and comments on the closure of the Cardington Fire Research Centre (NCE 10 November), and your current campaign to reopen the facility.

The articles state that all large scale fire testing has been halted by the closure of Cardington because there is no other facility in the UK that can provide this service.

However, at our Technology Centre in Leighton Buzzard, Taylor Woodrow operates a construction test facility accredited by United Kingdom Accreditation Service and ISO 9001.

The echnology entre has formed an alliance with Chiltern International Fire, which has experience in undertaking large scale testing of buildings, to provide a unique range of multi-functional, largescale fire testing services.

Cardington was undoubtedly a valuable asset, but its closure does not have to be the end of all large scale fire testing in the UK. Alternative facilities, such as ours, will continue to expand our knowledge of the way buildings behave in fires.
