Leeds Arena build 'will go ahead'

Construction of Leeds Arena will go ahead despite development agency Yorkshire Forward’s failure to secure £18 million of Government funding, according to the city council.

Joint council leader Andrew Carter has insisted that the 12,500-seat city-centre facility will be built with or without central government help.

However, Sheffield MP Clive Betts says the correct decision has been made, and that it would be unfair for Yorkshire Forward to support Leeds Arena, which might have undermined Sheffield Arena.

The thumbs down follows a Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) ruling that the £78m arena does not provide value for money, although they may reconsider a revised project.

A BIS spokesman said “After reviewing the Yorkshire Forward proposal for the Leeds Arena project, the independent Industrial Development Advisory Board has recommended that it can be developed further to provide the best possible value for money.

“We have asked Yorkshire Forward to work with Leeds City Council on this, and would consider any new proposal they put forward before deciding whether to approve an investment.”

  • Sheffield arena has been ripping off the people of West Yorkshire for many years. They charge ridiculous amounts of money for 'booking fees',admin fees etc, they charge for the car park, visitors from West Yorkshire cannot use public transport due to the inadequete late night transport back to West Yorkshire.
If the Leeds arena is built, due to the city centre location it will be easy for people who normally visit Leeds to book in person ,so avoiding some of the extra fees associated with booking online.
The owners of Sheffield arena should stop complaining and start treating their customers with more respect and stop treating them as mugs to be fleeced at every opportunity.
