THE OLYMPIC construction programme will be centred on the Lower Lea Valley starting with a massive contaminated land clean up.
This rundown area of east London will be transformed from a 200ha industrial wasteland to the biggest urban park to be created in Europe for over a century.
First a vast landscaping and environmental clean- up programme will treat contaminated land and reprofile mountains of demolition waste. The River Lea will also be reprofiled.
The Lea Valley park will house most of the venues including the ú245M ($460M), 80,000 capacity Olympic stadium, the $137M aquatics centre, the $54M velodrome, and a $26.8M, 15,000 capacity hockey stadium.
It will also be the site of the Olympic village plus the $15M, 6,000 capacity BMX bike circuit and four arenas which will host the basketball, volleyball, handball, fencing and pentathlon events.
