The world’s largest tidal stream turbine will be built in Scotland by turbine provider SIMEC Atlantis Energy in partnership with General Electric.
The two companies will work on developing the AR2000, the largest and most powerful single-axis tidal turbine in the world.
The AR2000 turbine stands 25m in height from the seabed, weighing 150t. The rotors will be 20m in diameter and will rotate between six and fourteen times a minute. The subsea connection system will take less than 30 minutes and require no additional intervention.
The project will see the AR2000 turbine installed at the MeyGen test project in Scotland, with hopes of rolling the technology out commercially in the future.
The partnership will also be key to the second phase of the MeyGen Project, known as Project Stroma, which will see two additional Atlantis AR2000 turbines connected via a new subsea hub to a single power export cable which will then be connected to the National Grid via the MeyGen substation.
Data recently published by Ocean Energy Europe revealed Scotland is already the world leader in marine energy generation.
