Work has kicked off on the Keadby 2 combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station being developed in Lincolnshire.
The plant, which uses ’first-of-its-kind’ high efficiency gas-fired generation technology, will be the most efficient gas turbine in the UK power system, converting an estimated 63% of energy produced from burning gas into electricity (typical gas turbines run at 30%).
Contractors PJ Caryes are undertaking the main civils work, responsible for the construction of all foundations and walls for the turbine buildings, cooling tower and auxiliary structures in addition to a ring road around the site.
Prior to main civil works beginning, local Brigg based contractor CLS Civil Engineering worked to demolish existing structures from the former coal fired plant to prepare the ground for construction as well as providing staff to the project to help with day-to-day site activities.
Other firms from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire have also been subcontracted to provide piling work for the new power plant foundations, site accommodation and security.
Once operational, the plant will be able to quickly react to demand, cycling up to an output power of 840MW in just 30 minutes.
The project is being undertaken for SSE and managed by Simens.
Siemens power and gas energy solutions managing director Wesley Tivnen said: “There is a strong supply chain in the UK and making sure local firms can benefit from this project is really important to both Siemens and SSE,” he said.
“I’m pleased that through events, such as Meet the Buyer, we have been able to build a picture of what skills are available in the area.”
The Keadby 2 CCGT is being built on the site of the site of a former coal-fired power station. The Lincolnshire site is also home to Keadby wind farm, the largest onshore windfarm in the UK.
Planning permission for the Keadby 2 plant was first granted in 1993, with designs going through several iterations to incorporate new technology.
The plant is expected to be operational in 2022.
