Spanish contractors may have missed out on High Speed 2 works, however they led the way among the award winners at this year’s Tunnelling Awards.
Dragados won the award for Innovation in Technical Product or Equipment for using Orion’s noise monitoring technology on the Bank Station upgrade. While Ferrovial won three awards including Alejandro Vazquez named the Young Tunneller of the Year.
Last month, Spain’s transport minister Pedro Saura confirmed that Spanish contractors are currently involved in over 100 projects in the UK, adding that the UK remains a “top priority market” despite Brexit.
Bagging the gong for Innovation in Instrumentation & Monitoring, Sixense was awarded for its use of interferometric synthetic aperture radar, and InSAR satellite monitoring on Crossrail.
In total, 14 awards were up for grabs with the judges commending the extremely high level of entrants. Eight the awards were live judged as part of the Tunnelling Festival.
The awards brought the curtain down on the Tunnelling Festival, which featured speakers from Tideway, Highways England and High Speed 2 among others.
