Sochi on course for Winter Olympics

Russia has announced that preparations for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games are running smoothly, with 220 of the 235 projects are running on time.

President Dmitry Medvedev said: “Most construction projects for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics are well underway. Only 15 projects were delayed because of problems such as land confiscation and I have urged the relevant departments to speed up the compensation process for compulsory land confiscation in these cases.”

The main transport infrastructure is due to be completed in September 2012, and all construction work is set to be completed by the targeted date of July 2013. A further 30 Olympic sites will be commissioned this year.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said: “Construction and decoration of 49 of the 123 Olympic facilities is already underway while the design for a further 42 has now been completed.”

Sochi is home to a major Black Sea port and is dubbed the ‘Russian Riviera’. It has a population of 400,000 and features more than 100 nationalities.
