Silverstone to be resurfaced again after MotoGP farce

Silverstone’s grand prix racetrack in Northamptonshire is set to be resurfaced for the second time in two years, after last year’s MotoGP Grand Prix was cancelled due to the track’s poor condition. 

Tarmac has been appointed to carry out a full resurfacing of the track in June, after standing water forced the cancellation of a British MotoGP Grand Prix in August 2018.

Aggregate Industries - who carried out the initial resurfacing project before last season’s race - launched a full review of its work after race promoter Dorna was forced to cancel the race for the first time since 1980 after the start was delayed by six hours as repeated efforts were made to clear standing water. It had to refund 56,000 ticket holders.

Tarmac will carry out £5M of essential track maintenance work over 20 days between June 10 and 30. Tarmac will be using a bespoke and highly durable asphalt solution that has been specifically designed to withstand the stresses produced by vehicles competing in professional racing series.

Work will be carried out under the guidance of motorsport track expert Jarno Zaffelli, appointed by Silverstone as a contractor for the duration of the project having been involved in planning the project since October 2018.

Tarmac’s construction business managing director Paul Fleetham said: “Our appointment demonstrates both the quality of our people and our first class track record in delivering high-profile, nationally significant schemes.

“We have assembled a highly skilled team of professionals from across the country who will be working with pioneering innovations in automated construction to deliver the project to the highest possible standard. We look forward to getting underway.”

Silverstone managing director Stuart Pringle said: “Getting to this point has involved a lot of work by the staff at Silverstone but throughout it all we have been completely focused on making sure we make the right decisions to guarantee the future of our most important events with Formula One and MotoGP.

“In Tarmac we have a globally-renown company working on the surfacing of the track, and we have one of the most respected of track designers in Jarno Zaffelli working as an expert advisor to Silverstone during the works.”
