Programme management: defining success

Programme management is seen by many as something of a dark art; hard to qualify and harder still to quantify the value it brings. NCE teams up with London 2012 delivery partner CLM and the Olympic Delivery Authority to demystify the practice in a webinar. Watch it here.

So what is programme management? It’s a simple enough question, but, as with many things in life, the answer is often far more complex. Practitioners are masters at hiding behind jargon and acronyms and clients don’t provide clarity, employing a range of different names for what appears to be the same role; project managers, programme managers, asset managers, delivery partners, programme delivery partners, project delivery partners and construction managers all working within major projects across the UK.

To tackle this question, NCE deputy editor Mark Hansford was joined by Jason Millett, CLM chief executive and programme director, and Kenna Kintrea, deputy director of venues and infrastructure at the Olympic Delivery Authority.

London 2012: Mace’s programme management was key to success

Millett and Kintrea bring some exceptional experiences to the table and over 40 minutes shared case study examples from the hugely successful £7bn project to deliver the Olympic Park. Put simply by Millett, “many people don’t really know what programme management is, and its full impact is not understood”.

The webinar set out to correct this. Our three panellists answered your challenging questions throughout.

Why watch this?

The aim of the webinar was to bring some practical reality and context to the complex and often misunderstood subject of programme management; getting to the “nitty-gritty” of the issue; and tackle these questions:

  • What was the role of programme management on the Olympic programme?
  • How did it add value to the client’s outcomes?
  • What did you have to do to guarantee a successful outcome?
  • What makes good programme management?
