Plans for a cylindrical residential tower in Paddington, London have been given the go-ahead by Westminster council.
Nicknamed “The Cucumber” the 149.5m, 42-storey building at One Merchant Square is the tallest in a series of new buildings planned in the Merchant Square development.
The building, which features a “distinctive crown-like peak” was originally granted consent seven years ago, but plans have been revised to include more residential space, by dropping plans for a hotel. Plans to include a bar at the top of the tower remain in place.
Along with its sister building, Six Merchant Square, the two buildings will provide over 420 homes new homes for the area. Plans for Six Merchant Square were also altered, to add more stories, rising from 15 to 21.
Consultants WSP will be providing structural engineering services, with other team members including environmental consultant Aecom, and M&E engineers Hoare Lea.
WSP head of UK structures Jane Richards said the firm was glad to see the project taking shape. “Having been involved on the project since outline consent seven years ago, we’re excited to now enter into the final steps of full government support for this sizeable scheme,” she said.
“Whilst the structural solution has not changed for the tower, this is not the case for 6 Merchant Square, the tower’s sister block, which is now a completely different form and height. The foundations and basement for this building have already been partially constructed with other previous Merchant Square development and this sub-structure has been successfully incorporated into the new building design.”
“What’s structurally very interesting about the tower is the perimeter columns connect to the floor slabs on only one side of each column, which creates really open circular floor plates that are uninterrupted by structure,” Richards added.
The building, and wider Merchant Square site has been designed by architects Robin Partington & Partners (who have re-branded as Apt).
Apt Project leader James Ewen said: ”we are delighted with the City of Westminster committee’s endorsement of the proposals for 1 and 6 Merchant Square and their positive comments regarding the redesign of the masterplan, which seeks to reinforce Paddington as a destination and create a strong sense of place. We now await the Mayor’s decision.”
Because of the buildings size, the project will also need a final go-ahead from London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
