Transport for London (TfL) is launching an “Uber-esque” bus service, offering an on-demand seat booking service.
The innovative, app-based service will run in Sutton, using eight 14-seater minibuses along the lines of the Uber taxi service. The scheme is set to run for 12 months, and TfL is considering a second location to further test the viability of the service.
A four week consultation exercise about the route in Sutton is now underway. ViaVan and Go-Ahead, which have a collective knowledge of app-based services and bus operation will run the trial.
Passengers will get free WiFi and guaranteed seating, as well as flexible stops in certain areas.
It is hoped the scheme will encourage people to use public transport more, improving London’s air quality and cutting congestion.
“We are always looking at how we can harness the latest technological developments in transport to improve the service for our customers,” said TfL innovation director Michael Hurwitz.
“This trial will help us to understand if a demand-responsive service will support the objectives of the Mayor’s Transport Strategy in reducing car dependency, and if it can be deployed to support the established bus network.”
Sutton Council environment and neighbourhood committee chair Manuel Abellan said the service had the potential to better connect the most car-dependant borough in London.
