Northern Line extension cost hike

Battersea Power Station

Talks are underway over cost increases on the Northern Line extension scheme.

London Underground said it was in discussions with Battersea Power Station over funding for changes to the design of the Malaysian-backed redevelopment scheme and the Tube stop that will serve it.

A Ferrovial, Agroman and Laing O’Rourke joint venture was selected by London Underground in 2014 for the design and build of the Northern Line extension from Kennington to Battersea.

In the same year, Skanska was named by the Battersea Power Station Development Company as preferred bidder for the contract to turn the disused plant into a mixed-use scheme including offices, homes and shops.

London Underground director of strategy David Hughes said this week that good progress was being made on the Northern Line extension.

He added: “Changes have been made to the proposed development at Battersea and to the new Tube station beneath. We are now working with Battersea Power Station to agree the necessary changes to the contractual arrangements between us to reflect these revised designs.

“These design changes will lead to an increase in the overall cost of the project and we are in constructive discussions with the developer about how this cost will be attributed. We are also working to deliver the project even more efficiently, further bearing down on costs.”

A spokesperson for Battersea Power Station said: “Provision for design changes was made at the outset given the scale and complexity of this major infrastructure project. TfL and Battersea Power Station are working collaboratively on those designs and any related costs.”

New Civil Engineer reported last month that the start of tunnelling for the Northern Line extension had been delayed until next year.
