The next phase of demolition works of the Polcevera viaduct in Genoa, Italy, has begun with the removal of the 40m deck spans between the piers.
Mayor and commissioner for the motorway bridge’s reconstruction Marco Bucci said the bridge deck sections would be cut near the piers and then lowered to the ground to be removed. The operation took place at the end of last week with removal of the first section taking around eight hours.

One of the main towers and around a 200m long section of the cable stayed viaduct, more commonly known as the Morandi Bridge, catastrophically collapsed in August this year killing 43 people.
Demolition of the remaining two towers, which span over a housing development and a 150m wide railway yard, started from the western end in December last year.
Construction of the new Renzo Piano designed bridge is due to start in March this year. The design was chosen from around 20 submissions which were not made public.
Italian contractors and engineering companies Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri will build the bridge after winning the €200M (£180M) construction contract.
The new bridge is now set to open by 15 April 2020, within the 12 to 15 month period which had previously been promised.
An investigation into why the bridge collapsed is ongoing. New Civil Engineer previously revealed that investigators have found corrosion on main stay cables, which is being looked at as a cause of the collapse.
A damning Italian transport ministry report released in September blamed Autostrade for the collapse saying it lacked the analytical expertise to inspect the bridge and claimed Autostrade missed “warning signs” about the bridge’s condition.
