Curtins, CGL, Breheny Civil Engineering, Sweco UK and Jacobs all won awards for their business culture at last night’s New Civil Engineer 100 Companies of the Year 2018.

The business culture section of awards recognises firms which are having a real impact in key industry action areas such as collaboration and diversity.

Project description: Curtins’ collaboration is with students and staff at the University of Leeds. The Yorkshire uni is undertaking a £500M campus regeneration project and Curtins has seized the opportunity to provide students with advice and link their studies with the real world.

It has robust external benchmarking and, in achieving an impressive gender balance, is ensuring that male and female employees equally feel valued and included. It also does an exceptional amount of school outreach.

Winner: Breheny Civil Engineering
Project description: Suffolk-based Breheny Civil Engineering aims to directly employ all staff on all its projects. This requires robust training and development policies to ensure it employs and retains professional, competent people. More than 10% of the firm’s staff are professionally qualified and Breheny runs an ICE-approved training scheme that develops engineering technicians along with incorporated and chartered engineers. The firm has 49 EngTech qualified professionals, and says this puts it in the top 10 companies in the UK ranked on volume of staff with this qualification.

Winner: Sweco UK
Project description: Sweco (pictured above) has driven a range of measures to reduce carbon emissions as lead consultant on infrastructure projects that form part of Renfrewshire Council’s £130M City Deal. Sweco implemented the PAS2080 standard for managing carbon from infrastructure several months before its formal introduction and carried out a detailed carbon accounting process during the specimen design stage.

Project description: Jacobs’ Mental Health Matters initiative is on a grand scale. It delivers an extensive support network, including more than 1,000 positive mental health champions across 26 countries, enabling early intervention for staff who may be suffering symptoms of poor mental health.
