Space agency Nasa has unveiled designs for 3D-printed towers that could house humans on Mars.
The Mars X House design, which took first place in the latest round of Nasa’s Habitat Challenge, was designed by space exploration architects SEArch+ and 3D printing firm Apis Cor.
The competition tasked teams to submit designs for a habitat that could one day house the first astronauts on Mars.
The Mars X House design involves tower-like structures built from Martian soil which can be upgraded with additional 3D-printed add-ons. The team’s plan involves multiple Mars X Houses being built on Mars by smart robots.
“Mars X House is autonomously constructed using indigenous Martian materials,” said a Nasa spokesperson.
“It forms a pioneering and durable habitat supporting future human missions to Mars.”
SEArch+ co-founder Melodie Yashar – who led on the Mars X House project – said: “Winning this latest phase of Nasa’s Habitat Challenge is an incredible honor for all of us at SEArch+.
“We’re thrilled and humbled by the support from Nasa and congratulate the other winning teams in our shared efforts to create human-centered design concepts for Mars and beyond.”
Second place went to Team Zoperhous from Arkansas, US, whose shelter would be printed by an autonomous rover. Third place went to Mars Incubator group.
