Mott MacDonald appointed designer on £30M East London Line extension

Mott MacDonald has been appointed designer and technical adviser for the £30M Phase 2 East London Line extension, connecting it with Clapham Junction, by Rail for London.

Mott MacDonald will be providing detailed design for all civil engineering works for a new section of two-track railway line. This also comprises three bridge structures several retaining walls, earthworks, drainage, trackwork, road and cycle paths, landscaping, noise studies and noise barrier design. The technical advisory service will cover civil engineering and systems up to the opening of the railway.

The retaining walls have been designed to minimise the need for removing waste material and the need for fill material to be brought onto site. The design also includes a landscaping scheme for a public amenity area.

The East London Line provides Londoners with fast and reliable cross-river rail journeys in a fleet of 20 new air-conditioned trains, enabling 100,000 passenger journeys a day. As part of the project, 14 stations have been refurbished with a further four new stations built.

The East London Line currently runs from Dalston Junction in the north via the City and Docklands to New Cross, Crystal Palace and West Croydon in the south.

Mott MacDonald project director, Stuart Davis said,

“The East London Line extension will dramatically improve mobility in this area of London,” said Mott MacDonald project director Stuart Davis. “Mott MacDonald has a wealth of experience in the rail sector, dating back more than a hundred years, and we have been involved with the East London Line since 2005.”

Phase 1 was completed in May 2010. Phase 1a, which will connect the network to Highbury & Islington in the north, is expected to be completed in spring 2011. Work on Phase 2 of the East London Line is expected to be completed during summer 2012.
