M25 deal a "farcical waste": green transport group claims

The Campaign for Better Transport has slammed the decision to award the Connect Plus consortium a £6.2bn deal to widen and manage the M25 as a “farcical waste of money”.

The Connect Plus consortium reached financial close for the M25 widening PFI deal this afternoon - but the value of the scheme has increased from £5.5bn to £6.2bn.

Part of the deal will see two sections of the M25 expanded to four lanes: between the M40 and A1, and the M11 to the A13 at Thurrock.

Responding to the announcement, the Campaign for Better Transport’s roads and climate campaigner Richard George said: “No sooner has the contract been awarded than the costs are already rising.

“Last year this was a £5bn project to widen four sections; now the Government will get two sections widened for £6.2bn.

“To make matters worse, the Government’s own research shows that the no matter how much capacity you add, the M25 will just keep on filling up and congestion will just keep getting worse.

“This is a farcical waste of tax payers’ money at a time when infrastructure budgets are being wiped out because of the credit crunch.”
