Construction is set to ramp up on the world’s longest span suspension bridge after it secured full funding.
Mott MacDonald will oversee work on the £1.5bn Çanakkale 1915 bridge in Turkey after lenders backed the overall £2.13bn Malkara to Çanakkale motorway scheme.
The British firm has been acting as technical advisor to lenders for the public-private partnership (PPP) scheme, which involved reviewing design, construction methodology, operation and maintenance proposals.
Mott MacDonald will now monitor construction and operations for the £2.13bn scheme, which also includes an 88km three-lane motorway between Malkara and Çanakkale and 83km of connection and access roads, as well as 36 overpasses, 33 underpasses and 140 culverts.
A joint venture between US engineers Parsons and Turkish firm Tekfen Engineering is providing engineering consultancy services for the bridge, which was designed by COWI. Daelim, Limak, SK Engineering and Yapi Merkezi.
“This prestigious project, which involves the world’s longest span suspension bridge, helps reinforce our position not only in the bridges sector but as a leading lenders’ technical advisor, not only in Turkey but worldwide,” said Mott MacDonald bridge specialist Abdul Farooq.
The bridge will span 4608m in total and run for 2023m across the Dardanelles Strait.
A headroom clearance of 70m under the main span will let tall ships pass under the bridge, while the 318m high steel towers will be founded on concrete caissons – watertight retaining structures – in the Çanakkale Strait.
As the record-breaking bridge sits across a seismic zone, designs have been tested to ensure it can withstand earthquakes and severe wind conditions.
Piling works for the bridge towers is ongoing, while site preparation for the bridge approach viaducts has also started.
The motorway scheme, including the bridge, is expected to be complete by the end of 2021.
