A search and rescue effort is underway after a dam collapsed in Kenya, killing at least 45 people according to Reuters.
The Patel dam, in Solai in Nakuru county about 190km northwest of Nairobi, is reported to have collapsed after weeks of heavy rain.
Governor Lee Kinyanjui said the collapse occurred at 9pm yesterday evening and had caused “huge destruction to both life and property”. Local television stations are reporting on Twitter that 24 bodies have already been recovered and 2500 people have been displaced.
The governor also urged people in other areas of the country to be vigilant after heavy rains have caused flooding.
The Kenyan Red Cross is currently coordinating the relief effort.
