New images of the design development for High Speed 2’s (HS2) terminus at Euston Station in London have been released.
The new images include consultation proposals for green space around the station, locations for bus and taxi rank and entrances and exits from the new station.
The development is in response to feedback gained from public consultations held in February last year. Additional public engagement events are planned in 2019.
The new HS2 side of Euston station is being built in two stages. Stage A is planned to open in 2026 with the opening of phase 1 of the line and will involve building six new platforms below ground, on land external to the current station footprint to the west. Stage B1 will then follow, opening in 2033 with a further five platforms being built adjacent to stage A at the same level, but inside the current Euston station footprint.

HS2 said due to a “desire” to see better alignment with the surrounding streets, new entrances will be built on Cobourg Street to the west, and to the north of the station on Hampstead Road, as revealed by New Civil Engineer last week.
Inside the station, covered squares are being considered to allow additional waiting areas and space for the different station users to move around the station. However HS2 said routes to connect Cobourg Street and Eversholt Street on the east were still dependent on any future redevelopment of the Network Rail station and may include changes in level.
The planting of trees along the western boundary of the station will be limited by a basement underneath.
Euston station entrances and exits
The taxi rank is currently planned to run to the north of the station however HS2 said a consequence of this would mean the public realm would then be at a higher level. It said the placement of the taxi rank would now be subject to a more detailed analysis as the design progressed.
Cycling hubs are planned for various locations around the station as well as the building of a new London Underground entrance on Gordon Street to the south of the station to link it to Euston Square tube station.
The location of a bus station however, is still subject to ongoing discussions with Transport for London (TfL).
Euston station taxi ranks
HS2 said the proposed northern open space was too remote from the local community so it is now looking at open space to the south of the station, to the north of the station entrances, and to the north of Langdale, including improvements to Euston Square Gardens to the south.
Earlier this year, GLA deputy mayor planning, regeneration and skills Jules Pipe expressed major concerns over the integration of the new HS2 station with the as yet unfunded Network Rail station upgrade.
As part of the redevelopment of the entire Euston site, Lendlease has been appointed by HS2 Ltd as the master development partner to progress plans for growth in the area.
HS2 commercial director Tom Venner said it was now starting to “absorb plans” and it would have a “really firm plan” for the area by early next year.
New development in the area is not part of the hybrid bill and as such is subject to a standard planning consent. Venner said it was working to produce a planning submission for the area to be placed in two to three years time.
