High Speed 2 preparatory works bill passed

MPs have approved a paving bill that will allow spending on preparations for the project.

They voted 350 to 34 in favour of the High Speed Rail (Preparation) Bill in the House of Commons last Thursday.

The bill received a bigger majority than it did at its second reading in June.

The bill will allow the government to make land purchases and carry out early works for the rapid rail link. It will now go to the House of Lords for consideration.

The government has targeted the end of the year for obtaining Royal Assent for the Bill.
