The prime minister of the United Arab Emirates has approved plans to build a 15km transport system above the streets and through high-rise buildings in Dubai.
The system consists of pods which run beneath rails mounted above Dubai’s streets, stopping at 21 stations along the route. It has been designed by Belarus company SkyWay Technologies Co.
The system will link the Dubai International Financial Centre with downtown Dubai.
The pods are fitted with power generators and can travel at a maximum speed of 150km/h.
The system will be able to transport 17,000 passengers an hour, the Dubai Media Office has claimed. It said that the system “offers an urban transit experience that features modern-designed pods passing through Dubai’s towers. It is characterised by uniquely designed stations and rail-supporting structures extending along the track. The project will maintain design harmony with existing the Dubai Metro stations.”
SkyWay general designer Anatoly Yunitskiy added: “This is not only a great honour, but also a huge responsibility for the entire SkyWay team.”
The “trestle-type transport system” will have much lower material requirements compared to conventional transport projects, as well as lower land allocation.
A spokesperson for UAE’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said: “The Sky Pods initiative is part of RTA’s efforts to provide autonomous transport, one of the key aims of the Dubai Autonomous Transportation Strategy aimed at converting 25% of total transportation services in Dubai into autonomous journeys on various transit means by 2030.
“It is also part of RTA’s efforts to enhance the integration of public transit means and offer solutions for short journeys (first and last mile) enabling public transport users to reach their final destinations.”
