First look at HS2's Old Oak Common station designs

Project promoter High Speed 2 Ltd has published the first images of the Old Oak Common station design in west London. 

Old Oak Common station will be part of phase one of the £26bn line between London and Birmingham. It will be the first stop on the line’s for trains starting at the southern terminus at Euston. The new images come a year after the announcement that WSP and WilkinsonEyre had won the design deal – previous images have only been indicative.

A contractor for the £1.3bn station construction deal has still to be announced. HS2 Ltd has delayed naming the contractor, but is understood to be in final negotiations with a Balfour Beatty/Vinci/Systra joint venture. Workers are currently clearing the site before construction gets underway.

The station will interchange with other services including the Elizabeth Line and the Great Western Main Line. 

The current plans are for six 450m HS2 platforms to be built in a 1km long underground box, with twin tunnels taking high speed trains east to the terminus at Euston and west to the outskirts of London.

WSP project director on Old Oak Common Adrian Tooth said: “Our design responds to the station’s function, recognising that more than half of those using the station will interchange between the below ground HS2 and the Elizabeth Line. The station form takes inspiration from our Victorian railway heritage and the juxtaposition between the above and below ground railways.”

Former HS2 Ltd chair Sir Terry Morgan has said HS2’s first phase should initially terminate at Old Oak Common, as a cost cutting measure.

Speaking to the House of Lords economic affairs committee recently, Morgan said the “extremely complex” 10km section from Old Oak Common to the Euston terminus should be taken out of Phase 1 and off the critical path as a result. This would enable the work to be delivered at a more cost effective pace.

In this scenario passengers would have to transfer from HS2 trains onto the Elizabeth Line to reach central London when the first phase opens in 2026. Old Oak Common will be four stops from the Elizabeth Line’s Tottenham Court Road station in the West End.
