Details of two new Leeds stations revealed

A project to build two new railway stations in Leeds has taken a step forward after the city’s council revealed more detailed proposals. 

Plans include a station at Thorpe Park, east of the city centre, on the Leeds to York/Selby line around 2km from the existing Cross Gates station. A park and ride facility would be constructed as part of the plan. 

The Thorpe Park scheme is part of a wider project to regenerate the area and will be connected to the East Leeds Orbital Road, which is expected to be completed by 2021 .

A second station has been proposed at White Rose, a shopping centre and office park on the outskirts of the city, on the main Leeds to Dewsbury  Transpennine route.

The location is 750m south of Cottingley station, and the council has not decided whether it would be in addition to or a replacement for the existing facility.

The outline business case for both projects will be prepared by spring next year following a public consultation into the proposals that began on Tuesday. 

Plans for a parkway station at Leeds Bradford Airport will be consulted on later this year.

Leeds City Council executive member for regeneration, transport and planning councillor Richard Lewis said: “These two new station proposals are part of our exciting Connecting Leeds vision for improved transport in the city, which features significant investment in major new infrastructure.

“These stations are planned to meet the needs of people travelling to and from two areas of employment growth in the city at Thorpe Park and White Rose.

“Thorpe Park will provide a park and ride for the east of the city as a whole and a rapid public transport link into the city for the planned population growth around it.

“While there is already large-scale employment at the White Rose shopping centre and the neighbouring office park, this is likely to grow further now that Millshaw has a new owner.

“The White Rose station will complement the transport offer in the area which already has a park and ride at Elland Road and where cycling infrastructure is due to grow with longer-term ambitions for the City Connect Superhighway in the future.”
