Cundall commits to carbon positive strategy

Multi-disciplinary engineering consultant Cundall has announced a new sustainability strategy.

Its One Planet, One Chance strategy focuses on changing the way the company thinks and operates so that it can become carbon positive by 2025.

Cundall aims to roll out its zero carbon initiatives to 95% of its clients by 2025, and the project already has already drawn a lot of interest from clients asking the firm to help them develop their own strategies.

Cundall global head of sustainability Amie Shuttleworth said that there was a collective desire to make the company more sustainable when she joined three years ago, but a lack of coordination inhibited progress.

“When I went around the offices, a lot of people didn’t know what we wanted to achieve, or what they could do to help us achieve a sustainable vision,” she said.

The strategy was built following a company-wide consultation, using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as a base, as well as input from the UK Green Building Council, Shuttleworth told New Civil Engineer.

She added: “We used everyone’s input and worked with the UK Green Building Council to stress test our draft strategy and now we have a really robust framework.”

The consultation found six areas for the strategy to focus on, including climate positive action, zero carbon energy, materials and supply chain, health and wellbeing, ethics and equity and climate change adaptation.

The strategy also involves additional training for those who have been highlighted as future industry leaders within the company to ensure the sustainability mindset is carried through into the company’s future.

Cundall managing partner Tomás Neeson said he was proud that the strategy built on the company’s legacy, “The strategy pulls together the legacy of the company and puts it into something concrete that gives everyone a plan, regardless of project, to work towards as a single coherent clan.”
