Crossrail bosses yesterday confirmed that full services on the new railway would only beginning running in late 2019.
Speaking at the London Assembly’s Transport Committee yesterday Crossrail chief executive Andrew Wolstenholme confirmed details of the phased opening.
The scheme had originally been planned to open in 2017 but following the October 2010 Comprehensive Spending Review, planned works were rescheduled in an effort to save costs and it was revealed that the central tunnelled section would instead be delivered in 2018, with a phased opening for the remainder of the line.
Wolstenholme said that the plan now meant that in May 2017 the north east leg from Shenfield to Liverpool Street would open followed by Paddington to Heathrow airport in May 2018. The first central section trains would run from Paddington to Abbey Wood in December 2018. This would be extended to Shenfield in May 2019 with full operation following at the end of that year.
- Crossrail chairman Terry Morgan also said yesterday that he understood that conversations about funding for the fit out of the Woolwich station — where Berkeley Homes has been funding the construction of a station box — were taking place between Transport for London, the Department for Transport, Greenwich Council and the Greater London Authority, but that no plan had yet been agreed.
