Crossrail station profile: Bond Street

Building a world class station in what has already been for several centuries a world class neighbourhood is the challenge for the team delivering Crossrail’s Bond Street station.

The area between the two Crossrail ticket halls at Davies Street and on the corner of Hanover Square and Tenterden Street includes some of London’s prime retail outlets, historic buildings, embassies and consulates. For all this to continue flourishing, provision has to be maintained for the large number of people travelling daily through Mayfair.

London Underground (LU), which is a partner in this project, will be working on the north side of Oxford Street, Europe’s busiest shopping street, to boost capacity in the existing Tube station and deliver step-free access from the street to the platforms.

Crossrail’s work will involve constructing two new ticket halls, carrying out excavation of two east-west platform tunnels and their interconnecting adits and escalator shafts, providing for passage of two tunnel boring machines, fitting out the station, facilitating construction of “over-site” developments and eventually testing and commissioning the completed railway.

The western ticket hall at Davies Street and access to the platforms will be built underground and a new development will be erected above the ground floor entrance to the station.

To integrate the new Crossrail station with LU ‘s Bond Street station upgrade works on the north side of Oxford Street, a passenger link tunnel is planned to run along Davies Street, connecting the two stations.

The eastern ticket hall will be located in Hanover Square. For the above-ground construction, discussions are taking place with interested parties regarding a new development that will connect Hanover Square to New Bond Street.

The existing Tube station, with entrances on both sides of Oxford Street, currently handles over 150,000 passengers a day. With the advent of Crossrail, customer numbers are anticipated to grow to over 220,000, daily.

LU is working closely with Crossrail to deliver its own plans to upgrade the existing Tube station. This includes building a new station entrance on Marylebone Lane, expanding the ticket hall, installing additional escalators to the Jubilee Line, providing step-free access throughout and building an interchange with the new Crossrail station.

“This upgrade is essential to bring Bond Street Tube station into the 21st Century, relieving congestion and making it accessible for all our customers,” says LU project manager Andy Grant. “Our challenge is to deliver all these benefits working from a small construction site on Oxford Street, while keeping the station open as much as possible.”

The Bond Street Crossrail station, despite its name, is on neither New Bond Street nor Old Bond Street - this is in part due to the platform length required to accommodate the Crossrail trains and a consequence of having to thread the platform tunnels over the existing Jubilee Line and parallel to LU’s Central Line tunnels. The station will comprise two, 260m-long, platform tunnels spaced 45m apart broadly parallel to, and approximately 100m south of Oxford Street. Two station boxes are required, one at either each end of the platforms which will provide the entrances at Davies Street and Hanover Square.

“One of the more complex challenges is the routing of a passenger link tunnel from the western ticket hall at Davies Street to LU’s Bond Street station,” says Crossrail Central project manager for Bond Street Tony Bryan. The link tunnel is a joint initiative between LU and Crossrail.

“The tunnel must thread its way through a narrow corridor, over LU’s Central Line running tunnels and below the congested underground utility services that run down Oxford Street, including the King’s Scholar’s Pond sewer (originally Tyburn Stream) and the abandoned piles that were used as a temporary bridge deck for Oxford Street during construction of LU’s Jubilee Line.”

“Another technical challenge is the station’s locations within the Mayfair and Stratford Place Conservation Areas,” explains Bryan. “Many of these buildings are considered Grade I, II and II* listed buildings. A primary engineering consideration is to monitor and manage the vertical and lateral settlement of the area around the station and along the route of the running tunnels so that the integrity of these buildings remains unaffected by the LU and Crossrail works.”

The Mayfair location also poses a logistical challenge to managing the flow of construction traffic to and from the two stations sites. Station box excavation and platform tunnelling will occur prior to the passing of the tunnel boring machines requiring the material to be removed from the site by lorry.

This has to be carefully managed to limit disruption in the residential areas around Mayfair and Oxford Street.

A project the size of Crossrail must inevitably be split into multiple engineering and construction contracts. One of the key challenges at Bond Street and across the project is effective co-ordination and management of the various contractors so that momentum is maintained, and the right work is completed at the right time.

Works at Bond Street will result in utilities diversions, demolition, access shaft, piling/diaphragm walling, sprayed concrete lining and main civil works. The programme requires more than one contractor to be on site at once, necessitating careful planning.

“We are in no doubt that Crossrail is shaping up to be a very exciting project and the engineers involved in the design and construction of Bond Street station are relishing the challenges,” adds Bryan.
