Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) is seeking to procure a civil engineering construction contractor to design and construct the $88.5M (£79M) Dunkettle Interchange upgrade, in county Cork.
The existing Dunkettle Interchange is located approximately 6km to the east of Cork City, where the M8/N8 road from Dublin to Cork intersects with the N25 road from Waterford to Cork, via the existing interchange, just north of the Jack Lynch Tunnel.
The interchange comprises a signalised roundabout, which includes a free flow overpass for traffic travelling along the N25 from the east to Cork, in the west, and vice versa. Traffic using the interchange other than for this movement must negotiate the existing roundabout which is controlled via traffic signals.
Works are set to include the construction of new road links, roundabouts and pedestrian and cycle facilities.
The contract also comprises works on elements of infrastructure such as a series of road links between the N8, the N25 and the N40 and on roundabouts as well as 43 major structures of various forms including railway structures.
Other works covered by the contract include utility diversions, traffic management, environmental mitigation
News of the contract notice has come after a €14M (£12.4M) Dublin metro engineering design contract was awarded to a consortium of consultancy Jacobs Engineering and Spanish firm Idom earlier this year.
Plans for a new north metro system in Dublin first appeared in 2001, but the project was put on ice in 2011 as the county’s economy struggled.
