Construction unions UCATT, Unite and GMB have reached a two year pay deal for 400,000 workers covered by the Construction Industry Joint Council (CIJC) agreement.
Under the new deal workers will get a 2.5% pay increase from July 25. There will be a further 2.75% increase in June 2017. Workers with specialist skills such as signallers and fork lift truck drivers will receive even higher pay rises. Basic pay rate increases will also be applied to sick pay and subsistence allowances. There are also more flexible holiday arrangements and workers will receive an extra day’s holiday from January 1, 2017. There are also new arrangements for travel allowances, which will now calculated using miles rather than kilometres.
But unions have said that the CIJC is increasingly in need of an overhaul and they have concerns including pay rates, the cost of living in London and how the agreement is applied to supply chains.
UCATT acting general secretary Brian Rye said: “This deal ensures that workers will enjoy above inflation increases for the next two years. However, employers need to understand that the CIJC agreement does not meet the needs of the workforce and unless it is radically reformed it will soon cease to be relevant to the industry”.
Unite national officer for construction John Allott said: “While we welcome this improved pay deal, it must act as a firm foundation for moving the agreement forward, the employers need to recognise that the deal is not an end in itself, but the beginning of the journey to address many of the problems that currently face our members in construction.
“The CIJC agreement urgently needs to be revamped for the modern workplace - and the unions want to work constructively with employers to achieve this goal.”
