A Farrans, Sacyr, Neopul JV (SFNJV) has won a £90M contract to build the extension of the £196M, 4.6km Edinburgh tram to Newhaven.
The SFNJV beat a Bam, Colas Rail JV, Dragados and a Sisk, Steconfer JV to the infrastructure and systems contract which will involve the track and civils work for the extension. This includes trackwork, road traffic signalling, roadworks, drainage, signing and marking, stops, substations, structures, pits and conduits, miscellaneous civil works including walls and boundaries.
The contract has been awarded ahead of approval of the business case, expected within the next two weeks.
The contract also covers external elements of the traction power supply system, including the overhead conductor system, feeder cables, distribution cabinets, stray current and earthing.
Other work includes slab and ballast forms of track, a tram stabling area, two substations, demolition of York Place tram stop and construction of eight new tram stops.
Overhead line equipment including poles and building fixings, bridge works, drainage and roadworks will also be carried out by the JV.
A £25M swept path contract to clear the tram route of all below ground utilities and obstructions, including archaeology, either by means of diversion or removal, has also been awarded to Morrison Utility Services (MUS).
MUS will now work with SFNJV to define the area which needs to be cleared.
The final business case for the extension was submitted earlier this month with the council expectes to announce its final decision on whether to go ahead on 14 March.
The initial cost estimate for the scheme was £165M, however since then the cost has risen to £196M with the council being asked to approve a budget of £207M.
If the project is approved, there will be a six-month early contractor involvement (ECI) period during which the target cost will be fully developed, with SFN JV working closely with the project team to test buildability, undertake surveys, value engineer and develop further innovation into their design.
