Bentley acquires geotechnical data company Keynetix

Software engineer Bentley has acquired UK based geotechnical data management cloud services company Keynetix in a bid to create a subsurface digital twin for infrastructure projects.

The integration of the Keynetix software will provide a cloud based platform for capturing, visualising, modelling and sharing of geotechnical data.

A digital twin is a digital replica of a physical asset and are being used increasingly on infrastructure assets above ground to optimise their performance and maintenance.

It is hoped that the new subsurface digital twins will be used for assessing and managing risks in infrastructure projects, and to the planning, design, construction and operations of infrastructure assets.

The creation and curation of the new digital twins will involve modelling the underground environment such as the geology, hydrology, chemistry, and engineering properties, and the underground infrastructure – and utility networks, structures, and tunnels. The information will then be analysed and simulated to model the subsurface behaviour.

The information will be supplemented with borehole reports which are managed by Bentley’s Gint software and fed into Bentley’s geotechnical analysis applications, Plaxis and SoilVision using the Keynetix software.

Keynetix managing director Roger Chandler said its mission had always been to make geotechnical data more broadly accessible and “valuable” and provided engineers with a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to advance digital engineering in the geotechnical industry.

“Today’s announcement will truly open up geotechnical data collaboration across Bentley, Autodesk, and other platforms,” he said.

Bentley Systems vice president and executive of digital cities Bob Mankowski said: “Infrastructure professionals know that the geologic, hydrologic, chemical and engineering properties of a potential project site, and the infrastructure assets buried beneath the soil, roads, and other structures represent some of the greatest risks to infrastructure project safety, budgets, and schedules.

“Having a subsurface digital twin – a 3D representation of the subsurface coupled with models to analyse and simulate behaviour – will be immensely valuable in all phases of the asset lifecycle.”
