Arup to design Euston High Speed 2 station

Scheme promoter High Speed 2 (HS2) Ltd has appointed consultant Arup to produce preliminary designs for a redeveloped Euston station that will become a new terminus for HS2 and help regenerate the surrounding area.

The plan is to create a new “high quality, user-friendly” terminus plus a new London underground ticket office in a contract worth £10M.

Reporting to HS2 Ltd, Arup will produce preliminary designs for the whole Euston station complex, including architectural design. This work will form part of the hybrid bill documentation, to be deposited by the end of 2013.

Arup will be supported by architectural firm Grimshaw and in logistics by contractor Costain. HS2 Ltd will work closely with Network Rail and TfL to maintain the required levels of peak and off-peak train services and to provide valuable opportunities to improve access to the tube network.

HS2 chief executive Alison Munroe said the Arup-led team won for its “innovative approaches towards engineering, architectural design and construction logistics”.

  • HS1&2 is another case of the failure to achieve joined up thinking for London. Are we seriously to have HS2 coming into a terminus 10 mins walk from HS1? Hopefully there WILL be through trains for HS1/HS2 allowing people to travel through or to transfer at Ebbsfleet or Stratford but it seems to me incredible that London continues with the Victorian concept, dating from separate railway companies, of having termini and separate methods for crossing London.

Maybe the Thames Airport will be different??
