Dorset County Council is showing off its “green” credentials as part of a £22M road maintenance scheme.
Works are currently underway to repair the failing foundations on the A338 Bournemouth Spur Road. 100% of the material taken out of the 40-year-old road is being recycled and processed on site to reduce the project’s carbon footprint.
For the recycling process, material is removed from the old road and taken into a compound where it is crushed, screened and processed with cement and bitumento to make the “foambase” material for the road.
As the foambase material is being produced on site – instead of transporting the material from a quarry – carbon emissions have been reduced by 582t.
The same lorries that take the old road material to the compound return with the foambase, further reducing lorry movements and carbon emissions.
Material from the widening of the road to provide a new running strip is also being used to re-landscape the verges, saving 12,500m³ of material going to waste and to landfill.
Just over two-thirds of the new road will be constructed from the recycled foambase. High performance asphalts have been used for the binder and surface layers, which are expected to last longer than traditional asphalt and reduce noise significantly.
Works to re-develop the route started last September and are expected to be complete by June 2016.
“We’re extremely proud of this scheme’s green credentials and it shows how a modern road construction project can mitigate its effect on the environment,” said Dorset County Council Cabinet member for environment councillor Peter Finney.
“It’s most unusual for a project of such short duration to recycle on such a scale, with the compound running day and night during the foambase operation and around 70,000t of material being reused.”
Dorset firm Langley Civil Engineering is undertaking the drainage work for the scheme, while R&W Civil Engineering is responsible for earthworks and safety fencing. In December 2015, it was announced that R&W’s parent company, Chantacre, had purchased Langley for an undisclosed sum.
What does the A338 project involve?
- Rebuilding the dual carriageway (from foundation to surface) between Ashley Heath and Blackwater in Dorset
- Replacing and upgrading the central safety barrier to concrete
- Bringing the carriageway width up to current standards – it currently varies between 7.1m and 7.4m but will become a consistent 7.3m
- Adding a 1m hard strip to give extra space for cars to move over for emergency vehicles or in case of breakdowns
- Improving drainage to solve flooding and “ponding” problems associated with the road
- Carrying out maintenance and protection to bridges
- Renewing road signs, cat’s eyes and road markings.
